About the Church
Since its founding in 1852, Calvary Presbyterian Church serves and engages with the Mize community. We seek to be a loving and friendly community that worships God. We place a high priority on teaching from the Scripture and following the example of Jesus. Our vision is to serve Mize and beyond with the transforming message of the Gospel.
What do we Believe?
We hold to the Westminster Standards as the confession of our faith, which is subject to and subordinate to the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, together with the Book of Church Order, comprising the Form of Government, the Rules of Discipline, and the Directory for Worship; all as adopted by our denomination, the Presbyterian Church in America.
We believe the Bible is the written word of God, organically inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is the infallible revelation of God’s truth and is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice.
We believe the God of the Bible is the one and only true God. He exists eternally as one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He created and governs all things according to His own good pleasure and the holy, wise, and perfect counsel of His will.
We believe people are made in the image of God, reflecting God’s glory and good rule over us. We are spiritual and rational beings. We communicate and establish relationships.
We believe all people are born fallen after the sin of Adam and Eve. We are all sinners and guilty of sinning against God in all areas of life. We are not as bad as we possibly could be, but we are at no point as good as we ought to be. Therefore, we are under just condemnation to eternal ruin, without defense or excuse.
We believe that God was pleased to set in motion His plan to save sinners and set free the entire creation from its subjugation to sin and the curse. Ultimately, that saving grace is fulfilled in the New Covenant of Jesus Christ.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary, true God and true man, who through His perfect life and sacrificial death atoned for the sins of all who will trust in Him, alone, for salvation.
We believe that the glory of salvation belongs to God alone as He sovereignly and graciously saves without any human individual merit, or foreseen faith. God the Father elects and willingly crushed God the Son out of his love for the elects. God the Son also willingly submitted to the hand of God so that sinners may be redeemed, and God the Spirit worked faith in the redeemed.
We believe that, through the perfect and complete atoning work of Jesus Christ, believers are completely declared righteous before God and adopted as sons of God.
We believe that the Church is the body of Christ to seek, gather, and edify believers through the work of the Holy Spirit, the faithful proclaiming of God's word, the administration of Sacraments, the gathering of fellowship, and the exercising of church discipline.
We believe in the resurrection, ascension, and return of Jesus Christ. On the third day after His crucifixion, God raised Jesus from the dead, becoming the firstfruits of believers' resurrection. Jesus then ascended onto the heavenly throne. He will soon return to bring God’s plan of judgment and salvation to completion.
We believe that all areas of our lives are to be lived to the glory of God under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
We aim to be “Faithful to the Scriptures, True to the Reformed Faith, and Obedient to the Great Commission.”
We have a high-church liturgy with a low-church feel. We use an order of worship that has been regulated by the Scripture and used by Christians for many centuries, but we want our worship to be understood for people today. So, we take time to explain what we are doing and why we are doing it. We generally preach and teach through books of the Bible, verse by verse, and we work hard to make the Bible understandable and applicable to everyone.
